The purpose of a leash is to connect you with your dog, allowing you to have constant control over him or her.
The 5 Main Types of Leashes
Eco-Friendly
Today’s green trends have led to more environmentally friendly products in many areas, and doggy gear is no exception.
Hemp leashes are of one of nature’s most durable fibers. Hemp tends to get soft over time, but it stays strong, which makes it the perfect material for collars and leashes. Planet Dog Hemp Leashes come with a cozy fleece-lined handle providing ultimate comfort for you on long walks. Leashes are 1″ wide and 5′ long. Machine washable, air dry.
Matching Hemp Collars are also available.
Nylon
Nylon Leashes are made from a durable, washable nylon webbing, available in a variety of colors, in three common lengths; 4′, 6′ and 8′. The leash should not be too wide so that it is comfortable in your hand.
Leather
Available in the standard lengths, 4′ and 6′, leather leashes can cost a little bit more than nylon leashes, but because over time the oils from your hands condition the leather, they’re easier on your hands if your dog is a puller.
Retractable
These leashes allow you to regulate how much or how little leash you give your dog. The mechanism inside the case of a retractable leash operates in much the same way the reel on a fishing rod does. A built in brake gives you the ability to regulate the amount of leash your dog has ranging from 1′ to up to 26′ depending on the leash.
Most retractable leashes will have weight guidelines printed on the packaging to help you choose the most appropriate size for your dog. They’re available in a variety of colors.
Long Lines
Long Lines are typically available in 10′, 20′ and 30′ lengths, made from cotton so are easy on the hands. These leashes are generally used for training when teaching a dog recall (coming when called). The substantial lengths of these leashes give a dog a fair amount of freedom to roam, while ensuring they will not wander off on you while you’re training.
Tie Outs
Tie Outs are steel cables in a plastic coating not unlike some bicycle locks and are typically found in lengths of 10′, 15′ and 20′. These cables can be attached to a peg anchored in the ground, or to any immovable object, giving your dog some freedom to roam without being off-leash. Tie Outs should not be used to tie your dog up in the back yard for hours on end, but are great for outdoor activities where you include your dog, like camping.
By the way, yes I can count. There are 6 headings listed above and the title of this post hints that there should be five. The function of the Eco-Friendly leashes and the nylon leashes are the same, just the material is different.
Pssst, go for the hemp!
