Apparently 110 pounds of kibble. That’s what George the Great Dane, and current holder of the Guinness World Record for world’s tallest dog eats, every month! That’s the equivalent of 4 (13kg)/28 pound bags of Orijen which is over $300 CDN, per month, and you thought feeding your Pomeranian was expensive!

An average Great Dane is between 28 and 36 inches in height, George stands 42 inches tall on all fours. He’s over 7 feet long from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. That’s a lot “O” dawg!

Great Danes, one of the “Giant Breeds” (a blatantly obvious statement looking at George), generally live to be between 8 and 10 years old. Because they are capable of explosive growth from birth through their first 18 months of life, they are, as are other large breed dogs (Mastiffs, Rottweilers etc), susceptible to hip dysplasia and other joint problems. For this reason, it is very important to “grow them slow”.

Too Much Too Soon

There are obvious physiological differences when comparing Danes and wolves, what both have in common however, is that in order to maintain optimal skeletal health, they both need to grow slowly.

Wolf Pups? Weren’t Talking About Great Danes?

There is a connection here, bear with me.

Wolf pups, once weaned (3-4 weeks of age) have to fight for every last scrap of food, and scraps (bits of leftover meat/organ meats, bone and offal) are about all they get. Some days they may not eat at all. They’re hunger is probably rarely satisfied.

Have you ever seen a fat wild wolf? Doesn’t happen!

Wolf pups eat lean in terms of how much and how often they eat and so, they grow slowly, never reaching their maximum growth rate. Wolves that have to run down and catch prey much bigger and faster than themselves, cannot afford to have joint problems, growing slowly helps prevent these problems.

From All About Great Danes;
“Most knowledgeable Dane owners will agree, feeding Great Danes a premium dog food with protein levels no greater than 24%, and fat levels between 12% to 14%, is key to proper development.“

As with most Giant Breeds, Great Danes have a slower metabolism than smaller dogs, therefore they have lower energy needs, which means they need less food per pound of body weight than do the smaller breeds.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

If you’re considering bringing home a Great Dane puppy, thoroughly research all diet options (including a raw meaty bones diet). He’s going to eat ALOT, so don’t skimp out on quality food. Grow him slow to prevent potential skeletal problems and keep your horse Great Dane healthy, happy and in your life for as long as possible.

On this particular day however, I decided to walk a dog that I hadn’t walked before. There was [...]

As I’ve mentioned in other posts, I volunteer as a dog walker at my local SPCA. It’s not uncommon for volunteers to become attached to the animals that they volunteer with, and I have my favourites too. On this particular day however, I decided to walk a dog that I hadn’t walked before. There was a pretty little tan coloured female Pit Bull named Breezy that had recently arrived. She seemed nice, so I thought I’d walk her. Once we got outside, I noticed that there were parts hanging from Breezy that made it impossible for this dog to be Breezy at all, this dog was a boy!

He’s a handsome boy, tan in colour with a white stripe on the top of his head and white on his chest. Not a big Pit Bull, but in good shape, lean and muscular, and where there’s muscle there’s strength. This guy would do well in the “tractor trailer pull” event in a strong man competition!

We were both having a good time, I could tell he was, because he was smiling that famous Pit Bull smile. That’s when I noticed that his bottom left canine looked odd. On closer inspection I could see that the tooth was flat on top, no sharp point that a normal tooth would have, and that the flat part of the tooth was blackened. Same thing with the other three canine’s, and, all of the molars on the top and bottom of his mouth seemed as if they’d had their points removed uniformly. My mind jumped to the whole Michael Vick horror show, and then to thinking that this dog, the one that I was walking right now, might have been prepped to be used as a bait dog by having his teeth filed. In that moment I knew I wanted to adopt this dog.

I don’t know for sure whether or not this dog’s teeth were filed or if somebody had plans to use him as a bait dog in a dog fighting ring. Maybe at some point he had been chewing on a chain or something and that wore his teeth down? It just seems very strange to me that all of the points on all of his teeth have been flattened, and so uniformly. I tried finding some pictures online of bait dogs with their teeth filed, but couldn’t find any.

I met this handsome boy on Thursday September 10th, and the following Thursday Zeus was at home with Sweety and I. The SPCA actually had a name on file for this guy, identified by a tattoo in his ear. The name they had on file was Zeus. I liked that name, so I kept it.

I made the following video this past Friday. Zeus’ and my first time at the ball park together. =]

Pit Bulls are vicious man-eaters!

I read that in the paper, numerous times. People all over the country are being ripped limb from limb by these savage beasts with the locking jaws. We weren’t allowed to have dogs in the building we lived in, so it was of little consequence to me. My 5 year old daughter and I lived in a modest apartment with our bunny and a couple of goldfish. I had grown up with dogs: a lab, a German Shepherd, and an American Water Spaniel…nothing fancy, just good family dogs my parents had picked out. One day, I figured I’d probably get a dog, but I didn’t realize how soon “one day” would come.

In one night’s time, living in my apartment went from relatively normal and uneventful to nightmarish. I suddenly found myself with a stalker who I did not know, and who tormented my daughter and me for weeks. The police were no help and I feared for the safety of my little girl. I knew it was time to go, and fast. I searched high and low for another apartment as spacious and affordable as mine had been, in a safe neighborhood, but came up empty. As a last resort, I swallowed my pride and asked my parents, who were divorcing, if I could move into their home. It was for sale due to the pending divorce, and neither of them lived there anymore. It was the house I’d grown up in, with a big yard in the country, where I knew my daughter and I could finally be safe from whoever was trying to scare us. They agreed, and I started packing.

It was this fear I had of the unknown that prompted me to start thinking about a dog before I even had my belongings packed. I did a little research, and decided that an English Mastiff was perfect for me. A dog that is big, loud, and threatening looking, but a gentle giant – it was ideal. Not being remotely aware of the dire pet overpopulation situation, the first thing I did was check out local breeders. $1500 was the asking price for an English Mastiff from a breeder, and I knew immediately I’d have to consider other options. It was off to the local animal shelter, to seek out my big, menacing dog. I hadn’t moved yet, but I figured there was no time like the present to start my search.

The first dog I walked was your regular, run-of-the-mill looking Shepherd mix. He was nice, but he wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. He was a little timid, and I wasn’t sure that he possessed the outgoing qualities I was looking for. I walked every big dog I could find that day, but didn’t feel that *click* I thought I would feel when I found “the one”. Disappointed, I was headed for the door when a shelter employee approached me.

“Are you looking for a dog that looks scary, but isn’t?” she asked, knowingly.

“Yes,” I replied, “but I don’t think he’s here today.”

“Before you go, I think you should meet Brutus. He just might be exactly what you’re looking for. He’s in the last kennel on the right,” she told me. “He’s a pit bull, and he’s been here for a week. No one has come to claim him, so he’ll be available for adoption tomorrow.”

A pit bull. Not wanting to show my trepidation, I agreed and followed her back to the last kennel. What I found there was the most stunning dog I had ever seen. How had someone abandoned this beautiful dog? I thought. We hooked him up to the leash and he pulled us right out the door, bounding towards the grass outside. His huge bully smile struck me immediately, and I leaned in cautiously to give him a scratch behind the ear. Before I knew what was happening, I was being ambushed by a giant tongue, licking my face with reckless abandon. The more I laughed, the more he licked. I finally broke free, and looked up at my daughter. “This is my dog,” I said.

That night, I couldn’t get my mind off of that ridiculously happy face. I went out and bought all the supplies I would need and decided that there was no time to waste, I would pick him up in the morning. I was the first one there, and took Brutus, who we renamed Rocky, out of that prison and into a house full of hugs and a warm bed for him to sleep in. My daughter was thrilled, and I felt a sense of relief that I wouldn’t be alone when I moved.

It wasn’t long after that we realized that Rocky was sick. Very sick. We took him to the emergency vet, and were told that he had late-stage pneumonia, and was literally on his last leg. More than a thousand dollars and countless vet visits later, he pulled through and assumed his position as a permanent member of our family. I took him to the new house and let him relax under a tree while I moved my belongings inside. Admittedly, my caution level was still a little high, based on his breed and his recent illness. My parents were less than thrilled with my decision to bring a pit bull into my home, and I understood their position. I warned my now 6 year old daughter to tread carefully around the dog, and make sure an adult was always within reach if she wanted to pet him. I filled a bowl of food and set it on the ground in front of him. He sighed, and laid his head down in the grass. “OK Buddy,” I said, “you eat it when you’re ready.” I continued on about my business, and stuck my head out thirty minutes later to check on him and bring him some fresh water. To my great dismay, I saw my daughter lying in the grass next to Rocky, her hands in his food bowl. Panicked, I ran outside to scold her and explain to her the danger she had put herself in by disobeying me. As I got closer, it became apparent what was occurring. Her hands were in his food bowl so she could scoop some food out – and feed Rocky by hand as he happily and gently accepted her offer. My fear subsided as I approached them and Rocky peered up at me with a look of utter doggie bliss. While I still reinforced the dangers of approaching a dog, any dog, without an adult present, I collapsed to the ground to join in the hand feeding. This was not the evil pit bull I had read about in the newspaper. This was just a dog, worthy of love, a home, and a family – just the same as any other breed.

As it would turn out, Rocky (later re-named Steve) was responsible for saving the lives of many other shelter dogs. Because of my experience at the animal shelter, and my inability to erase the sad faces from my mind, I became involved in pit bull rescue, and opened my home to the forgotten, the neglected, the overlooked pit bulls that needed temporary foster care and a re-up of love and affection. I have photos of all of the dogs that have passed through my door hanging on the wall, as a reminder of why I do what I do. 5 more adopted rescues later, Steve now has 2 pit bull brothers, 1 pit bull / lab sister, 1 Jack Russell Terrier brother, and 1 Jack Russell Terrier sister. It’s chaos, it’s messy, it’s loud, and it’s expensive. My friends and family call me crazy.

I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Stanley Coren, a professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia asked himself these same questions and set-out to find the answers. He compiled his research and theories in a book titled The Intelligence of Dogs, published in 1994.

Following is a list of top 10 smartest dogs as defined in The Intelligence of Dogs

1. Lhasa Apso – The Lhasa Apso was originally bred by Tibetan Monks and was used to alert the monks of intruders in the monasteries. The breed is displayed prominently in the Tibetan flag.

2. Border Collie - The Border Collie was bred in the United Kingdom and was used by farmers to herd sheep.

3. German Shepherd – The German Shepherd is a relatively new breed of dog, having only been around since 1899. It was originally bred to be a sheep herder

4. Golden Retriever – The Golden Retriever was originally bred in Scotland to retrieve waterfowl and game for hunters.

5. Doberman Pinscher – The Doberman was originally bred to be a ferocious guard dog. As a result of years of careful breading the modern Doberman Pinscher is now an energetic and lively breed suitable for companionship and family life.

6. Shetland Sheepdog – Although the Shetland Sheepdog closely resembles a miniature Rough Collie it’s true parent breed is the Border Collie. It is small in stature and a good family dog.

7. Labrador Retriever – The Labrador Retriever is ironically most commonly known to be from Newfoundland. Originally, Labradors assisted fisherman by dragging in heavy fishing nets. The Labrador is currently the most popular breed of dog (by registered ownership) in the world, and is by a large margin the most popular breed by registration in the United States (since 1991), and the United Kingdom.

8. Papillion – Papillons were a favorite of the Spanish aristocracy and today make excellent watch dogs.

9. Rottweiler -The Rottweiler (which mean the Butcher Dog in German) was bred in Germany to be a herder and because of its intelligence and strength were eventually used as draught dogs, pulling carts to carry meat and other products to market.

10. Australian Cattle Dog – The Australian Cattle Dog, also known as the Queensland Heeler, Blue Heeler and Red Heeler is a breed of herding dog developed in Australia for droving cattle. It is a medium-sized short-coated dog with a lot of energy, intelligence and an independent streak.

By Hector Sanchez

The breed was named after Dalmatia, a place in Western Yugoslavia on the Adriatic sea, which at one time was part of Austria. However, the dogs were known in other parts of the world as well long before they acquired the name of Dalmatians.

Historians have found references of this beautiful dog since the mid 18th century but also in other parts of the world the historians found that the breed was shown in several types of unique art like engravings, paintings, models and early writings which have accounted for the presence of spotted dogs of the same size throughout Africa, Asia and Europe. History also tell us that ancient gypsies carried these dogs in their trips around the world, which also explains the great widespread and popularity of the breed.

Later on, dalmatians were brought to Great Britain by members of the British upper classes who made trips to Europe and would often come back accompanied by some of the striking spotted dogs. After dalmatians were adopted by the British aristocracy who used them to accompany their carriages, the dalmatian soon became a feature of these processions. The dogs were taught to station themselves beneath the rear axle of the coach, and in some cases to trot underneath the pole separating the horses. They were also taught to lead the procession, trotting along ahead of the first horse, which was an impressive sight to see!

When, in 1860, Great Britain held its second dog show there were only five breeds represented. These included Dalmatians, and so far as history records, this was the breed’s initial appearance in dog show competition. Were it not for a gentleman named Fred Kemp, who was President of the British Dalmatian Club and a third generation owner of this breed with which he himself was involved for more than half a century, Dalmatians might not have survived World War I.

Mr. Kemp is credited with having kept alive dogs in his kennel through the difficult and in many cases devastating period between 1914 and the Armistice in 1918, providing breeding stock at the end of this period. It is exciting to contemplate what happened to Dalmatians in England at the close of World War I. They fairly leaped ahead in popularity, the two Dalmatians registered with the Kennel Club in 1918 having increased to 125 by 1925 and to 889 by 1932. When the world famous dog show resumed, following World War I, there were two Dalmatians entered. In 1934, no fewer than 199 Dalmatian entries filled the classes for the breed, of which 15 were provided.

The dalmatian also became known for his very famous role of being a “firehouse dog”. This was said to have started with the dogs being used as ratters, for the function of killing vermin in London’s stables and firehouses, which they did with expertise. Today, many Dalmatians can still be seen riding on the fire trucks with their masters. Dalmatians are still considered as the mascot and are often found in firehouses around the world.

But the Dalmatian is not only known as the “firehouse dog”, he also worked in war times as a sentinel, served as shepherd’s dogs and as draft dogs. They also have been seen in circus shows as “assistant” of the clowns, their intelligence, aptitude, and showy appearance having fitted them particularly well for this activity.

1. Maltese – Maltese a dog in the toy group is a breed known for its long, white, fine fur. This coat is uncharacteristic of most non-shedding dogs that have course, curly hair. The Maltese coat requires regular grooming because of its tendency to matte.

2. Bedlington Terrier – Bedlington Terriers are bright, clownish characters that love their families and being the center of attention. Their coat is soft and requires little maintenance.

3. Irish Water Spaniel – The Irish Water Spaniel (IWS) is considered to be the clown of the spaniel family. Bred for accompanying bird hunters, the Irish water Spaniel has a dense, double coat. The inner coat consists of thick ringlets covered by the long and wavy outer coat. This coat requires brushing every 2-3 weeks and needs an all-over trim every few months.

4. Chinese Crested – The Chinese Crested comes in two varieties, the Powder Puff which has hair on its head, feet, and tail and the Hairless, which as the name suggests, has no hair. The Crested has soft, smooth skin that is more prone to irritation and sunburn. They are recommended by the American Kennel Club for people with dog allergies. They are alert and good with children.

5. Labradoodle – One of the most popular of the “designer breeds”, the Labradoodle is a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. The coat of these hybrid animals varies from animal to animal but generally those that most resemble Poodles are safe for allergy sufferers.

6. Schnauzer (Miniature, Standard, and Giant) – Schnauzers are energetic, intelligent dogs of the Terrier group. Although the three size varieties are unique and separate breeds, all are double-coated with a wiry topcoat and a soft undercoat. The topcoat can be maintained with regular clipper-trims or by a method called hand-stripping which helps to preserve the wiry-nature of the fur.

7. Poodle (Toy, Miniature, Standard) – Similar to Schnauzers, Poodles come in three size varieties. The dense, curly coat of all three sizes requires regular professional grooming. Poodles were originally bred to accompany hunters and still maintain that high activity level. As such, they need rigorous, daily exercise and intellectual stimulation.

8. Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier – The Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier is prized for its soft, wavy, wheat-colored, non-allergenic coat. The Wheaton coat requires minimal but regular maintenance. Wheaton’s are less headstrong than most terrier breeds but they require daily exercise to maintain their role as an endearing family pet.

9. Bichon Frise – The Bichon Frise is a cheerful, sturdy little dog. It has a thick double coat that consists of a curly outer coat and a silky inner coat. The Bichons hair grows continually and he does not shed so he requires frequent brushing to prevent it from matting. While no dog is 100 percent hypoallergenic, all of the breeds listed above have non-shedding coats, which produce less skin dander, the cause of most allergies symptoms.

By Neil Lemons

What do you think is the most dangerous dog? A pit-bull, right? Nope, wrong. Surely then it must be a Rottweiler, a German-Shepherd, or maybe even a Chow-Chow. Again, nope, no-way, and incorrect. The correct answer is… a Dachshund. Yes, you read that correctly. Dachshunds are the most dangerous type of dogs. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania recently surveyed 6,000 dog owners and found that “one in five dachshunds have bitten or tried to bite strangers, and a similar number have attacked other dogs; one in 12 have snapped at their owners.”
So, surely the number 2 dog on the list must be a pit bull, right? Wrong! It appears that Napoleon Syndrome is real because the number 2 dog is a Chihuahua. Chihuahuas have similar statistics to dachshunds when it comes to biting strangers, their owners, or other dogs. Completing the top 3 list is the Jack Russell Terrier. So, why is that we assume pit bulls, Rottweilers, and Chow Chows are the most dangerous dogs?

The answer is actually quite simple. It’s because most clinical studies on this subject use medical data as the basis for their research. Since big dogs create bigger wounds they’re reported more frequently and this causes the medical data to be skewed inaccurately toward big dogs. Truthfully, all breeds can be provoked to bite. Whether or not a dog actually bites is generally a result of how well it’s been trained and treated. So, the question really is what dog breeds are genetically predisposed to aggressiveness? Here’s a list, in no particular order, of the 15 most dangerous dogs.

1. Giant Schnauzer – Similar to German Shepherds, the Giant Schnauzer was trained in Germany to assist soldiers. This dangerous dog possesses the size of a Great Dane with the intelligence of a Schnauzer. These qualities in addition to his natural tendency to be fiercely loyal make this a dog of which to be aware. Stranger anxiety in the Giant Schnauzer is more common than other dogs.

2. Akita Inu - The Akita Inu is a heavy boned, powerful, and alert dog. He possesses a dignified and courageous persona and has a tendency to be aggressive toward other dogs.

3. Chow Chow - According the American Kennel Club, “… the Chow is reserved and discerning with strangers. Their cat-like personalities make them independent, stubborn and less eager to please than other breeds. They require early socialization and training, and some kind of exercise daily.

4. Bullmastiff – The Bullmastiff is fearless and confident. They were originally bred to guard natural game preserves from poachers as such they are natural guardians of the home, but do not bark much, as silence was a virtue when guarding the preserves. Bullmastiffs are independent thinkers and may not respond to traditional obedience training.

5. Papillion – The Papillion, is very small and very loyal to its family. It can be weary of strangers and though they are generally sweet tempered they need to be watched carefully around non-family members or other dogs visiting their home.

6. Old English Sheepdog – Old English Sheepdogs (OES) are athletic and energetic and require lots of exercise. The OES was bred to herd sheep. He has retained his natural tendency to herd whether or not there are sheep and accordingly he may try to herd people or other objects. He is generally a loving, sweet animal but may become aggressive if he feels someone or something is interfering with his herding job.

7. Dachshund - The Dachshund, meaning “badger dog” in German, was bred to dig into holes, hunt for, and fight to the death with badgers. Dachshunds tend to be territorial and in order to make the integration into family life as smooth and happy as possible he requires consistent assertion from his owners throughout his lifetime.

8. Llasa Apso – Llasos were bred for hundreds of years as indoor watchdogs. They are naturally suspicious of strangers. Additionally, the dog possesses an aloof and independent personality – it requires consistent handling throughout it’s life and requires daily walks or exercise. Llaso’s are best for adult only families.

9. Miniature Pinscher – Miniature Pinschers are fearless, animated, and independent creatures. They are spirited, and require consistent reminders about who the true alpha dog is in the family.

10. Jack Russell Terrier (officially known as Parson Russell Terriers) – These little dogs are bright and very energetic. They require lots of exercise and are better in families with older children as they do not tolerate rough handling from small children.

11. Pit Bull – What is commonly known as the pit bull is officially known in England as the Staffordshire Bull-Terrier and in the United States it’s known as the American Staffordshire-Terrier. Whatever you call it, this dog is actually very people-oriented and is happiest when he is made part of the family and given a job to do. He is generally very friendly but is loyal to a fault to his family and will protect them from any threat.

12. Rottweiler – Rottweilers love their people and are protective of their territory. They do not welcome strangers until properly introduced. Obedience training and socialization are musts.

13. German Shepherd - The German Shepherd is a renowned guard and military dog. It is also a loving family companion. The breed is direct and fearless, with a strong, muscular body. He is a great family dog and is only on the most dangerous list because he can be trained to be aggressive (as can most dogs)

14. Dalmatian – The Dalmatian is the only horse “coaching” dog in the world and he has retained a natural affinity for horses. Dalmatians are very energetic and require daily long walks or romps in a fenced yard. Without regular exercise he can become destructive.

15. Chihuahua – Swift moving and terrier-like in behavior, Chihuahuas are highly intelligent and should not be underestimated even though small in size. They do not tolerate the rough handling that comes with young children so they are best for families with older or no kids.

Remember, all dogs can be provoked and all dogs, given the proper training, can be well mannered animals. Whatever breed you decide to add to your family it is important to socialize your pet with other animals and people as soon as possible. Also, consistent routines, affirmation, and discipline will make your new dog a happy member of the family.
