It’s Saturday and time to take a look at a few of the blogs I read this week.

If You Own a 100 pound Akita and Not a “Pit Bull” – Your Dog is a Wimp, I guess?!

Breed Specific Legislation doesn’t work. It hasn’t worked in Denver, Ontario or England. Some jurisdictions like the town of Elgin, Illinois are relaxing their stance on Pit Bulls, while other other cities like Omaha Nebraska, as reported by DancingDogBlog.com have instituted new laws requiring all pit bull and other “bully breed” owners to have their dogs leashed and muzzled when outside.

4. Pitbull Restrictions (and other bully breeds)

If you own a pitbull or other bully breed or mix as defined below you will be required to properly leash and muzzle your dog whenever he is outside, unless he is in a securely fenced yard. If you don’t have a fenced yard your dog will be required to be leashed, muzzled, and in control of a person 19 years of age or older any time he is outside your house.

In order to license your pitbull you must be 19 years old and show proof of $100,000 liability coverage. If you don’t follow these regulations you will be guilty of a first strike toward a reckless owner designation.Nebraska Humane Society

The persecution of the “bully breeds” still continues.

BlanketID Has You Covered

BlanketID.com, a local company that helps pet owners reunite with their lost pets has been in the news this week where they were featured over at Modern Cat where they gave away 10 free pet tags each with a free one year subscription to their service. At last count the Modern Cat write up had well over 400 comments! If your pet gets lost, BlanketID can help reunite you and your pet very quickly. Read more about BlanketID here.

Train Your Dog to Ring the Doorbell

I love this! Mary-Alice, who blogs at DogJaunt.com about her dog Chloe and traveling with her, wrote a post this week about how to train your dog to ensure she doesn’t poop in your hotel room, or any other room while you’re traveling with her. A little bit of training and a set of
Poochie Door Bells
and you’re set!

Thunder and Wine

The GoPetFreindly clan has been busy this week with a stop in Sandy Hook, hosting the 4th annual Trenton Thunder Bark in the Park and touring “pet friendly” wineries in the Finger Lakes area where they sampled some interesting (to say the least) named wines – Stoned and Lonesome, Well Hung, and 69 Ways to Have Fun to name a few. :/ Today their relaxing with Reisling and icecream, such a ruff life!

See ya next week!

Thanks for choosing my post on BSL in Elgin and Dr Finch's guest piece on what's up in Omaha in your review. As bad as these laws are, especially but not only because they are formulated in the heat of the moment, we've got to get a handle on these repeat offending owners. They are ruining the lives of good dogs and their owners everywhere.

I see no harm or foul with a dangerous dog law that deals with dangerous dogs. Period. No list of targeted breeds that are big and strong. If a dog gets a record as a repeat biter, the dog needs to be removed from that owner who is evidently incapabable of keeping the dog safe and, as Nebraska is doing–one of the good and decent things someone got put into the legislation–re-homing the dog with a family prepared to do right by the dog. So you don't have the killing machine that is Denver's BSL.

The problem most legislators face is that of rights of private property. That's what dogs are, property. It is not legal to seize property unless it's related to a crime or you have a police state, or as in Denver, a police city. At least that's my read of the law. So it's all in flux because we haven't hit on a policy that works, leaving the fate of our dogs hanging in the balance

It's been an amazing week for blanketID, we were also featured on the Dog Milk blog and with the Modern Cat giveaway has created quite the buzz! Such a fantastic response, yay!
    Thanks again Jim.

BSL is wrong. I'm looking into this now. A friend of mine can't get affordable home owner's insurance because she has a pit bull!

Thank you for the shout-out, Jim! And I love it that Karen at Doggie Stylish has a tutorial on how to make your own set of dog door bells (link provided in the Dog Jaunt post).
