A couple of months ago, I decided to volunteer as a dog walker at the local BSSPCA branch here in Victoria, and tonight I had my first shift. When there are enough volunteers, each dog gets a one hour walk twice a day, and each volunteer shift is two hours long, so tonight, I got to walk two dogs.
The first dog that I walked is named Justice. He’s not listed on the SPCA’s site at the moment, so I will post his stats once I get them. He’s a large dog, probably a shepherd lab mix all black. He’s a very strong dog, and so would do well with somebody experienced in handling a big strong dog.
The second dog that I walked is named Molly, a German Shepherd Husky cross. A story ran in today’s Times Colonist titled, Abandoned Pets Sign of Tough Times. As you can tell by that title, it probably hasn’t been the best week for Molly. Molly is an older dog, but she’s still got a ton of energy. The volunteer before me took her out for a full hour, and then I took her out for another 45 minutes. So, she’s got lots of energy for an older gal. She’s got great temperament too! She’s a very gentle and loving dog, and very easy to handle.
So, if you or somebody that you know is thinking about adopting a dog, stop by the shelter and say hello to Justice and Molly, and some of the other dogs currently in the shelter, or if you’ve ever thought about becoming a volunteer, visit the BCSPCA Victoria’s website, or send them an email if you have any questions. They’re always on the lookout for new volunteers.
