What Do Those Pretty Little Buttons Do?

Social Media Icons

Just a quick littleĀ  post to explain what all of these —> colorful little buttons are all about (a-boot in Canadianese). :P

The collection of buttons (shown in the image), are my social media icons, most of which you should recognize, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. For the rest, here’s the quick and dirty;

  1. The first icon (the orange one), is an RSS Feed icon. Clicking on this icon will ask you if you’d like to subscribe to the Doggy Bytes RSS Feed. Please do!
For more information about what an RSS feed is and why you’d want to subscribe to them, read this.
  2. The blue icon with the letter “T” inside is the Twitter icon. When you click on this icon it will take you to my Twitter page where you can follow me should you choose to.

  3. The darker blue icon with the “F” inside is the icon for the Doggy Bytes Facebook fan page, which will – surprise – take you to my fan page.

  4. The fourth one is self explanatory, hello?! Youtube!

  5. The icon underneath the RSS Feed icon is the Google Reader icon. Clicking on that one will take you to any RSS Feeds that I have chosen to share.

  6. The next icon (the colorful little circle), will take you to my Picasa web album, where you can view pictures I’ve uploaded. Picasa is Google’s answer to Flickr.

  7. Clicking the last icon will display my Flickr page, where again you can view pictures I’ve uploaded. I’ve also created a Flickr group called My Dog Rocks. I encourage you to visit the group and upload pictures of your canine buddie(s), and perhaps comment on some of the other doggy pics in the group.

There you have it, my current social media icons and what they mean. The live icons are right under the search bar. Click away! :)

  • All three of my dogs rock, so I added some photos of them. Nice idea!
  • Good looking dogs they are! Thanks for posting.
  • Hi Jim, just wanted to stop by (from Twitter @carnydog) and say Happy New Year. My dog rocks too - so maybe I'll add her picture to your Flickr page :-) Great idea. All the best, S

Thanks for this, Jim -- very useful. Can you please explain the difference between Flickr and Picasa and why one would want both? Is it that Picasa isn't interactive while Flickr is? It looks like Picasa's picture quality is better.
  • Thanks for your comment and question Edie.

Why both Picasa and Flickr? Good question! For me it really comes down to the fact that I'm a "Google" guy. I use a lot of Google's other services and I just love the integration among most of their different services.

I also use Picasa 3.0 on my Laptop (PC) which lets me easily add pictures to any folder in my Picasa web album. Flickr also has some desktop software but is nowhere near as feature filled as Picasa.

Having said that, Flickr is the big kid on the block when it comes to sharing photos and it will probably be very difficult for Google to unseat them.

So for right now, I use both. I'll probably settle on one or the either down the line.
  • Thanks, Jim -- that's a big help. Now all I have to do is take some more pictures so this becomes less of a theoretical issue for me!
