Two Resilient Dogs

While this blog is meant to have an international reach, I am also obliged to raise awareness on a local level whenever I can.

When I read this blog post originally posted on Carol’s blog over at www.victoriaadoptables.com, I was stunned to see the horrific condition of poor CeCe shown here suffering from an extreme case of mange, and that she had been in a US shelter where her condition had gone untreated. I can’t imagine the pain she must have been in.

Then Boone, the adorable guy in the bottom picture who homeless, suffered for who knows how long with a broken leg that ultimately had to be amputated.

Thanks to wonderful people like Carol and her organization, these two dogs will see a better life. If you’re local to Victoria, please pass this blog post on anyway you can, to help CeCe and Boone find the happy homes they deserve.

It never fails to amaze me just how strong some dogs are in their determination to survive.

CeCe and Boone are two of those dogs.

CeCe lived a sad life of neglect and ended up in a facility where her deplorable skin condition was left untreated. It seemed her only choice was to be euthanized and put out of her misery. Fortunately, a rescue volunteer took her into care and CeCe received much needed medical treatment. The mange has cleared, her coat is growing in and she’s a playful and loving young dog. CeCe is a medium size lab/shepherd mix, approx 2-3 years old.

Boone (aka Boo Boo) is a retriever mix, mid sized and 6 to 8 months old. No one knows exactly what happened to him as

he’d been homeless for a few weeks and badly injured. He’d been suffering for quite awhile, possibly hit by a car. Due to the severity of his leg injury Boone’s front leg had to be amputated. However, he’s adjusted well and loves to run and play with other dogs. Boone gets along well with both dogs and cats, is quiet and housetrained. See Boone run!

In the next few weeks, both CeCe and Boone will be flown up to Victoria Adoptables Dog Rescue where they’ll enjoy a Canadian Christmas in foster care. With the help of a trainer to ensure Boone learns recall and continued confidence-building for CeCe , they will then be up for adoption and placed in loving homes.

  • Of course these pictures are sad. You have to wonder when, given all of the "don't shop/adopt" public awareness, a tipping point will be reached and less animals will suffer. What's it going to take?

I see a close parallel with how people take care of themselves. Most deaths in America (and Canada?) result from so-called lifestyle diseases (smoking, obesity, diabetes). Yet, with all the public awareness campaigns about this, the situation gets worse. If people don't care what they do to themselves, what hope do animals have?

Sorry for such a "downer" comment ... just what I thought of when I read your post. I am so glad we rescued Buster. When we tell people about his story, they say he is lucky to have found parents like us. But based on what he brings to us and the way he has changed our lives (he was the inspiration for GoPetFriendly), we know we are the lucky ones to have found a dog like Buster.
  • I think there is still a big shift that has to be made in the value that people place on animal life. I think it has changed and is changing for the good, but until more people share the view that animals are just as entitled to a safe life as humans, we will unfortunately keep seeing the kinds of images contained in this post.
