I started out thinking I would write one post on the topic of raw fed dogs and salmonella poisoning, that is, salmonella poisoning in dogs “caused” by eating raw food; and in their owners by handling it. Well…one post turned into two, two into three, three into four (not including this post), and A Salmonella Story: The Series was born.
In this series, I’ll talk about;
- The prevalence of salmonella and other bacteria in the world around us
- Canine digestion and how the dog’s intestinal tract has evolved to deal with potentially dangerous pathogens
- How difficult it actually is for a dog to become sick from the salmonella bacteria and why, and the chances of you getting salmonella poisoning from your dog
- Things you can do to minimize the risk of salmonellosis while handling your dog’s food, and your own
I hope you enjoy this series and that I’ve been able to allay some of your fears about salmonella poisoning with respect to raw feeding, or at the very least, the words in this series of posts have left you with enough questions that you set out to conduct some of your own research on the subject.
Tomorrow’s post, the first “meaty” post in the series is called Bacteria are Everywhere, you can get to it from here.
